2008 hyundai azera review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. For the second year in a row, azera scored a first-place finish in the j. That's after landing a second-place (but still ahead of the toyota avalon) in power's 2006 initial quality study.  azera is hyundai's entry in the full-size, near-luxury segment, an alternative to the toyota avalon and nissan maxima. Azera boasts as much or more total interior and cargo volume as the avalon, the mercedes-benz e-class sedans, and the bmw 7 series. Both available v6 engines feature variable valve timing for low emissions and a broad power curve; while the standard five-speed automatic gearbox gives the driver the option of shifting semi-manually. These are features that compete with lexus, infiniti and acura. While there's nothing especially striking in azera's design or styling, take off the hyundai badge, and it could pass as family among any of the top-rated japanese nameplates.  inside, fit and finish are first rate, with quality materials and assembly. There's a quiet elegance in the simplicity of the instruments, usability of the controls and sleekness of design. What isn't readily visible received the same attention as what is, with hardware studiously hidden away and storage bins fully finished. All is not perfection: some of the faux leather feels more plastic than bovine. But the overall presentation is upscale.  at a more practical level, the azera equals or betters the competition in standard equipment, with special emphasis on safety. Eight airbags are standard, as are electronic stability control, traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, and active front seat head restraints. Rain-sensing windshield wipers, more commonly found only on high-end cars, are available. The 10-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels reserved for limited models last year are now standard on all azeras, as is xm satellite radio. The limited now comes with a power sunroof and a 315-watt infinity audio system with an in-dash six-disc cd changer and 10 speakers. New options include leather for the base model and an lg navigation system for limited. And all azeras benefit from a re-tuned chassis and quicker steering. lineupthe 2008 hyundai azera comes in two trim levels. The base model, which was called the se last year, has been renamed the gls. The gls comes with a 3. 3-liter v6 rated at 234 horsepower. The limited comes with a 3. 8-liter, 263-hp engine. The premium package 2,200) adds leather seats with heat in front, and a power tilt-and-slide sunroof. The sunroof is also available as a stand-alone option 950).  limited 28,550) now comes with a power tilt-and-slide sunroof and 10-speaker infinity premium audio, in addition to leather-trimmed seats (heated in front), simulated leather inner door trim, heated outside mirrors with power fold-away, an electroluminescent gauge cluster, power rear sunshade, and other upgrades. The limited model comes standard with the larger engine.  the ultimate package 1,250) adds a 605-watt infinity logic 7 surround-sound system with 12 speakers (including subwoofer) and external amplifier, power adjustable tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, power adjustable pedals, integrated memory system, woodgrain steering wheel and door pulls, and rain-sensing wipers. The navigation package 1,750) combines the 605-watt infinity surround-sound with the new the lg navigation system; the cd changer is deleted. To get all of the above, choose the ultimate navigation package 2,750).  dealer-installed accessories include a bluetooth hands-free phone system 325), floor mats 100), cargo mat 95), composite cargo tray 100), and wheel locks 50). A selection of pearl paint colors also cost extra 200).  safety features are comprehensive, including state-of-the-art frontal airbags, full-coverage side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, active head restraints for the front seats, and latch child safety seat anchors. All five seating positions have adjustable head restraints and three-point belts; the front seatbelts have pre-tensioners and height-adjustable shoulder loops. Active safety features for crash avoidance include antilock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist, electronic stability control, and traction control. walkaroundwhile there may be nothing strikingly new nor original about the looks of the hyundai azera, there's nevertheless a completeness, a proportional flow that both catches and pleases the eye. And while other automakers are drifting toward increased visual mass, hyundai is developing a crisper, more adventurous look all its own.  the front styling of the azera resembles that of the smaller sonata but with the comfortable filling out that can come with healthy aging; not quite stately, but definitely wiser. The headlights are familiar, as is the shape of the grille, although the latter is textured on the azera with fine horizontal lines, rather than the sonata's single bold slash. Similarly, azera's lower air intake is gently split horizontally, and its bumper subtly detailed with thin, bright-finish bump strips at each corner.  the side view reaches for elegance, with gracefully arced, micro-bulged fenders and a glasshouse that rises softly from the bonnet, flows smoothly over an elongated cabin and falls gently into the boot. The rear overhang extends a bit farther than the shorter front overhang, but wide doors and spacious windows temper this relatively minor discord. The trunk lid seems to sit atop the rear fenders, inviting unfortunate comparison with the awkward back end of the current bmw 7 series, but some designers are saying that's a necessary aerodynamic solution, and we're seeing the same sort of thing on the newest models from lexus and acura.  the azera's back end is equally reminiscent of the sonata, again albeit fuller, more mature. Sonata-like tapers outline the lighting arrangements and license plate. Led tail and brake lights are standard at all levels. A unique reflector strip reaching across the trunk lid doubles as a background for the only external display of the name, azera. A bright strip along the top of the bumper finishes the loop started at the front and carried along the side. The upholstery, the dash covering, the carpet, are all top notch. Even the fabric headliner is a cut above the standard mouse fur. Gaps between the bits and pieces of plastic and other materials are impressively tight, earning high marks for fit and finish. The glove box and storage cubbies are of good quality. All hinged fixtures, from glove box door to roof-mounted grab handles, are damped for smooth, quiet operation.  the dash sweeps gracefully across the car, beginning and ending in sectioned caps molded into the front door panels, and beneath an odd, table-edge-like flat rim that circles the entire interior from the outboard edges of the rear seats. Vent registers are symmetrically positioned near the doors and on each side of the audio and climate control panels centered above a large storage bin. Intuitively proportioned tachometer, speedometer, fuel level and engine coolant gauges peer out from a hooded pod through the top half of the steering wheel. Limited models upgrade to an infinity audio system that includes a 7-channel, 315-watt amplifier, in-dash six-disc cd changer and 10 speakers.  the center console is trimmed in natural-looking woodgrain and brushed aluminum. Up front, almost tucked up underneath the dash overhang, is a covered ashtray with lighter. Aft of this is a small cubby, with controls for the seat heaters. Driver and front passenger have access to a pair of cup holders that hide beneath a hinged cover at the forward end of the console. The top of the bi-level console and storage bin is padded.  map pockets in each door are provided, part of which flip out to expand. The backsides of the front seats wear magazine pouches. Back seat passengers get a fold-down center armrest with two cup holders and, overhead, reading lights.  the seats, front and rear, are comfortable and supportive. Front seat bases are fully enclosed so hardware isn't exposed. The driver's seat power lumbar covers an impressive range. Front seats give more and better thigh support than the rear.

2008 hyundai sonata review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. That means it's roomier in almost every dimension than most of its mid-size competitors, with a full-size edge in creature comfort.  for enhanced safety, the sonata comes standard with electronic stability control, and it has earned the federal government's top five-star crash-test rating for front and side impacts.  for 2008, the sporty se has been upgraded with high-performance tires, a decklid spoiler, and an eight-way power driver's seat. The 2008 sonata limited model comes standard with the super-deluxe stereo that was optional last year. And xm satellite radio comes standard on all 2008 models. Otherwise, sonata is not significantly changed since it was totally redesigned for 2006. lineupthe 2008 hyundai sonata comes in three trim levels. The v6 comes with a five-speed shiftronic automatic.  sonata gls 17,670) is the base model. It comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, power heated outside mirrors, power windows, central locking with keyless remote, am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo with six speakers, xm satellite radio, a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, 60/40 folding rear seat, and 215/60r16 tires on 16-inch steel wheels. The same package is available with a power tilt-and-slide sunroof 1,550).  sonata se 19,570) comes with larger disc brakes, 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with 215/55r17 all season performance tires, eight-way power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support, leather-wrapped shift knob, tilt-and-telescope leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, solar-control glass, fog lights, automatic headlights, chrome window belt moldings, and a trip computer. A chrome center-bar grille, chrome-accented exterior door handles, and new aluminum bodyside moldings identify limited from the outside. Wheels and tires are the same size as those on the se, but use a different tread pattern. For 2008, the infinity am/fm/xm/6cd/mp3 stereo with six speakers, subwoofer and component amplifier is also standard. The limited v6 24,170) is similarly equipped. A power tilt-and-slide sunroof 900) is optional.  safety features on all sonatas include the mandatory dual-stage front-seat airbags; front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection; and full-coverage side curtain airbags designed to provide head protection. Antilock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and electronic stability control (esc) with traction control also come standard, as does a tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundunchanged in appearance since its 2006 redesign, the front fascia of the hyundai sonata remains refreshingly clean and spare, with sharply angled headlight housings and a quiet, clean-cut grille topped with a sliver of chrome. Wide and deep openings beneath the front bumper provide a home for tightly focused fog lamps and visually pull the front end closer to the ground, while directing cooling air into the radiator. The striking, concave hood reduces the car's perceived mass without cramping the engine compartment.  the side treatment avoids the all too common wedge look with an almost horizontal beltline riding above softly shouldered fenders and door panels. The flat-flanged rims on the up-level 17-inch wheels suggest a high-end european import more than an affordable asian nameplate.  the taillight outlines repeat the headlight shapes and bookend a broad, trapezoidal license plate inset. Again, there's a hint of other cars' architecture, most notably current camry and accord models. Sporty, california hot rod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped versions.  the hyundai sonata hasn't yet found its signature design cues, but its designers are looking in the right places. interiorhyundai upgraded the standard cloth upholstery in the gls and se for 2008, but otherwise, sonata's interior remains unchanged.  the overall look is clearly competitive with most in the class and better than some. Some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels are the only shortcomings we noticed.  a polished, hard-surfaced applique underlined with a thin slice of chrome divides the upper and lower halves of the dash. The upper is a glare-absorbing dark color, the lower a space-enhancing light tone. The passenger airbag enclosure is seamless, a trend in high-end midsize sedans.  as with many modern cars, the stereo head is fully integrated into the dash, making difficult any aftermarket customizing of the sound system but adding an upscale touch. Air conditioner controls are mounted beneath the stereo, within the accent trim centered in the lower portion of the center stack. Stereo and air conditioner controls are substantial, finger-friendly, intuitive knobs and buttons, with status and selections clearly displayed in their respective lcds.  three round dials in the hooded instrument cluster communicate the bare necessities of operational data to the driver. The largest is the speedometer, nestled inside a polished circle. To its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column is a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version; one is an on/off for the esc, the other the dash-light rheostat. Beyond that is a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself, easier and more elegant when starting or shutting off the car.  all models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Redundant controls for the audio (optional on gls, standard on se and limited) are appended to the lower left-side of the hub. On the other side of the hub are the standard cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function. Hyundai says the audio controls will be improved by the end of the 2008 model year.  outward visibility is good, although the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door, ahead of the wheel well. There's a roof-mounted, hinged assist handle inside every door.  seats are comfortable, with adequate bolstering for the style of driving to which the sonata aspires. The limited model's leather adds a touch of class without pretending to be luxurious. The height adjustment on the driver's seat, both manual and power, pivots on the seat's front mounts, which effectively moves the seat forward as it rises. This compels taller drivers to choose between rearward seat travel and forward sightline, not always a happy compromise. On the upside, this adds inches to rear-seat legroom behind the driver, one of the multitude of measures in which the sonata generally bests its competition. Sonata comes in second to the new honda accord in front and rear headroom, and to the toyota camry in rear-seat headroom, and by a mere one- to three-tenths of an inch. And of the second-tier competitors, the kia optima alone betters the new sonata and then only by three-tenths of an inch in front seat hip room. In short, the sonata is among the roomier cars in its class.  rear seats are accommodating, with the bottom cushion in the center position only minimally higher than and nearly as well padded as the outboard positions. Both rear outboard seating positions have adjustable head restraints, as do the front seats. The rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds to allow the transport of long objects, such as skis and snowboards or gardening tools.  storage bins and cubbies are. driving impressionboth engines in the 2008 hyundai sonata engines incorporate some of the latest developments in variable timing of intake v. 2010 hyundai elantra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The blue model shares with other elantra models a more efficient alternator system and lower-friction engine components. In addition, it has revised transmission gear ratios, engine calibration changes and a shift indicator, and will be identified with blue badging. We found the front seats very comfortable. The ride is good, although a bad freeway with relentless sharp bumps is more than the elantra can accept without passing on some of the annoyance to those in the front seats. Optionally available on the blue is a comfort package 1,700) which includes air conditioning, a 172-watt am/fm/cd/mp3 audio system with six speakers, and cruise control.  there are numerous dealer-installed accessories, including a rear spoiler 375), bluetooth connectivity 325), floor mats 95), a cargo tray 70), and mud guards 85).  elantra gls 16,895) adds the automatic transmission, air conditioning, tinted windshield, sunvisor with illuminated passenger vanity mirror, cruise control, fog lamps, and the 172-watt sound system with six speakers. Options for the gls include a sunroof 900), and a navigation package 1,100) which includes navigation, bluetooth, and steering-wheel audio controls. The gls can also be fitted with all the dealer-installed accessories available for the blue version.  the se 17,845) is the upgrade model and adds p205/55r16 tires on 16-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, trip computer, electronic stability control with traction control, and brake assist. A premium package 1,150) includes a power sunroof and heated front seats. The premium plus navigation package 2,000) is the premium package plus navigation and bluetooth. It also includes cupholders in the rear armrest, and the rear seat is split 60/40 and folds down to provide more space for hauling larger items. All models except the blue and gls sedan also include standard electronic stability control (esc) with traction control and brake assist; the esc system is not available with the blue or gls sedan model. walkaroundthe hyundai elantra sedan was designed by americans in hyundai's california studio, and is a good-looking compact.  the elantra received a lot of careful design work, and could almost pass for being seamless. That quality fitting also reveals itself in the smooth opening and closing of the doors.  the elantra sedan's good looks move this korean compact car toward the world of the stylish. Its sculpture is clean, with a high beltline running along at the body-colored door handles. It has a subtle face, with trapezoidal headlamps having rounded edges, leading down and into the grille with horizontal chrome bars. At the bottom of the fascia is a long, slim air intake. It lacks definitive fender flares because it doesn't need them; the elantra doesn't shout to be seen. At the front, the headlights have a more stylized shape that wraps up and over and around the corners. Below the edge of the hood is a thin opening with the hyundai emblem in the center, and then below that is a large trapezoidal opening that is flanked by prominent foglamps. At the rear are large, vertical taillamp units that should be easy to see by just about anyone, thus enhancing safety. There's an especially large dead pedal to support the driver's left foot. The radio control knobs are blessedly simple, like radio knobs should be.  in the rear, there is 35 inches of leg room, along with good hip room. There is also a large trunk. For carrying cargo, the rear seatbacks fold down to allow a pass-through into the trunk.  storage compartments are abundant. There's a neat box inside the top of the dash, and a sunglasses container in the headliner. The fixed door pockets have built-in bottle holders. Below the three climate control knobs there's a small companion to the glovebox and, below that and forward of the shift lever, there's also an open storage area. There are two cupholders behind that, and a double console under the driver's elbow.  generally, the interior is notably quiet, for a compact car.
